Also, what are your thoughts on the Taurus PT1111 millennium G2 (12+1) at 199.99 vs m&p shield (8+1)?
As someone who has owned both, there's no comparison really. The Shield out classes the Taurus in every way.

I'd suggest a bit larger gun since you're relatively new to handguns, an M&P 9c or M&P 9, Glock 19 or 23 are a bit larger and most find them easier to handle.

I would also strongly advise against open carry. The whole point, to me, of being armed is to be concealed, open carry will just draw attention to yourself. Get that CCL ASAP

Lots of good advice given in this thread.

No comparison between reliability & quality of Shield vs. Millennium. Between those two, get the Shield.

But a "full size" pistol (like G19 or an M&P9 or M&P9c) holds more ammo and is easier to control.

Don't open carry unless you just have to. And even then you need some really good handgun retention training before you start.

Get a permit and carry concealed. There are plenty (dozens)of good IWB and OWB holsters.

OWB will be faster, while IWB will generally conceal the gun better for a lot of people (particularly those that are rotund or insist on wearing tight shirts).
