But I'd heard the bufu community didn't want any special considerations.....that they wanted to be treated like everybody else. Strange.

Ok, Let them pay for the paint and the labor. New Orleans is a third world country when it comes to the streets. City funding should not be used to paint sidewalks for people to feel good about themselves. The same goes for the statues taken down. How was that monetary expenditure justifiable considering the current state of New Orleans infrastructure?
