But at what cost do we take this risk? Do we mortgage our future like Brooklyn did for a guy that could easily not resign next year? Because that's probably the only way we out-bid other teams.

Yes. What Paul George really costs you is the assets you'd need to move contracts and create cap space for when Jimmy Butler is a FA in a few years. So would you rather make a sales pitch to Paul George for an entire year, or have the ability to hope Jimmy Butler will choose you in FA?

I see where you're coming from and that makes a lot of sense. I'm all for the all in strategy. We might as well shoot for the stars with how we lucked into Boogie.

But the other option is to stay as flexible as possible while winning enough next year to keep Boogie. Doing that buys you some time to make other splash moves as they come available. You could argue that plan is just as risky as trading for George. But we'd likely also keep our picks with that scenario. Which is important because if this fails, that's our fall back. If we get George, we have no fall back plan. We suck for years with no way to rebuild and have no assets to give. That's scary as hell.

ETA: I suppose trading AD would be our fall-back plan like Ballhawk said. That makes all this a little less terrifying. I just don't think we could survive as a franchise if we fell into a situation like Brooklyn. Which is why I'm so hesitant

I think George fits the roster much better than Butler because he is much better off ball. If we can get him without completely mortgaging the future (ie the 2018 1st plus 2 swaps MM suggested) then you have to go for that. If you are giving up multiple unprotected 1sts and swaps like Brooklyn then that could decimate the franchise if it goes south and it is not worth it.

If AD, Jrue, and Cousins combine for $80M+ in 2 years, you cannot make the cap space to sign Butler anyways. And Butler isn't going to pick NOLA. Upper tier players don't pick us. Even though George would more than likely not re-sign, it is probably worth it to have a full year to sell him though he would also have a full year to sell boogie on LA too.
