Because traditional big men aren't good at basketball.
The Dream, Kareem, Barkley*, and Shaq all had skill sets that would be dominating today. Kareen would still get the skyhook. Hakeem, Barkley, and Shaq would be unstoppable in today PNR's
*I know Barkley is a different build from the rest

Also back then bigs never faced double teams and had a lot of one on one clear outs on the block. Look at how many times Lebron, Durant, and Love got doubled team when posting up. We are talking about almost two different sports with how different the game is played. NBA rules today favor guards and yesterday's NBA favor bigs.

Well I was Alive. But conveniently there is this little platform called YouTube where I can observe the nostalgic delusions firsthand

people say bigs are more skilled now but i think it's the exact opposite the only real difference is the deminishing of the bigs
bigs in the 90s were urber skilled. ewing was automatic from 15 feet in. you really go sit here and tell me that big men were more skilled than the admerial or the dream shite rik smits would sit there and hit that 10-15 foot jumper all day long and he was like 7'3
the only real difference is emphsis on the three ball and it was more physical in the 90s.
you had to account for the big men in the league so you had more goons on the roster to collect fouls than you do now.
there have always been skilled bigs in the league sabonis and shrempf were shooting threes well before GS came along

Lack of hand checking, more emphasis on the 3, more versatility in skill sets, less specialist.

The post up is the most inefficient play in basketball and makes the entire offense go stagnant.

Lack of hand checking
"Yeah, he's got space now. But if I was guarding Lebron in the 90's I would get to put my hand on his hip and steer him."
Yeah, you go get him, Doug

What a dominant big. What a dominant high percentage shot taker!

quote:He is right. Well he isn't (gottlieb wasn't good enough or strong enough to steer lebron), but it is much easier to work in space than it used to be. Lebron wouldn't have been affected as much as guys like steph, harden, etc.

I'm an older guy that appreciates the late 80s and early 90s NBA and the NBA of the last 6 or 7 years.
