Buying a boat trailer that has no VIN or title. Trailer is home made in pretty damn good condition, but how do I get this thing legal?

Was told by a state police fella that I need to go to a Justice of the Peace to get an affidavit saying that it isn't stolen..? Then, I take it to the state police in BR to get inspected..?

Anyone go through this process, and does it sound right?

If its home made just take it to the state police in BR and tell them you made it.

I have no receipts for anything, don't they ask for that if you say it's homemade?

They're supposed to ask you for a bill of materials, just like with a homemade boat. I've heard of people getting by without one, but I wouldn't bank on it. Sounds like your state police buddy gave you good advice, just do that.

I went thru a similar situation several years ago but don't remember all the details. Luckily my stepmom is a JOP so I don't have to remember the details. Lol

Honestly, I'd call the local JOP and ask. If you're in rural Caddo Parish let me know and I'll dent you in touch with my stepmom.

I appreciate it. Instead of getting the seller involved I figured I could just tell the local JoP that it's a trailer I built years ago..

So, state police in BR said no beuno.. No VIN = shite out of luck.

Hypothetically speaking.... let's say there are other older boat trailers around. If another trailer had a license plate (maybe a title, no VIN) could something be done to swap stuff around onto another trailer like mine. Now it's a really old license plate (99). Would probably have to request a new one. Anyone have any insight? All of this is hypothetical of course.

Hypothetically depending on how bad you want this trailer you could buy a titled trailer with VIN and stamp that same vin on your coveted trailer and register it/ swap license plates. Or buy a harbor freight trailer register it and stick the license plate on your coveted trailer. Hypothetically.

Hypothetically speaking, if you ever got into an accident involving that trailer you could get royally fricked. Not saying it would ever happen, or if it did they'd have any way to prove the plates had been switched, but rest assured the insurance companies and personal injury attorneys would clean you out if they did.

Not telling you what to do, but I would call around to a few different state police troops and try to find one willing to work with you. Sounds like BR just doesn't want to deal with it. I know in other states and maybe LA you can do what you described, basically sign an official document saying it's not stolen and after a grace period of no one reporting a similar one stolen, you get a notorized doc saying it's yours. Once that hoop is jumped through you can have it inspected and have a new VIN assigned.

All good points fellas, appreciate it. I believe that's gonna be my only real option, gonna try a pity excuse and see if I can get one to bite.

Frustrating cause this trailer is in perfect condition, and ya know I'd like to save the grand or so I'm gonna have to fork up for a trailer I don't need. Sucks that it falls into a loophole like this. Would be glad to give the state some money to inspect a perfectly good trailer.

I had to deal with something similar many years ago. Either the state police or wildlife and fisheries stamped a VIN nummner onto the trailer with a maul and punch set. They had a log book of new VIN numbers and stamped the next one on the page onto my trailer.

This was in Louisiana.

Edit : here you go.

Also- you can always have a friend sign a bill of sale with a generic boat trailer description.
