You can be the captain of a team without being its best player fwiw.

I would argue that Magic was clearly the Lakers' best player by 1983 or 1984 at least imo.

How can someone "clearly" be adjudicated the Lakers best player in 83 or 84 when he wasn't even the leading scorer on the team and accounted for more TOs incurred than Kareem? Kareem was also the team's best low-post defender leading the team in blocks and led the team in PER in both playoffs those years. I simply don't buy that argument.
