After spending HOURS in quite an arduous hike 8 miles up, you can't NOT climb that last 400 feet. I freaked a bit when I saw it, but it's not as vertical as it looks. (My 12 y/o son pushed me forward on it!). Well worth it once you're up there. Going down is another adventure as you can't see past the initial hump when you're up top.
Here's a couple of pics from my trek. First is the view up, then view down, then me at near the top of the cables. That's a 2007 LSU/OSU Natty T-shirt I'm wearing.
