I think they realize that, but there are only so many visionaries around and you don't tell the visionary what to do, you let him tell you what to do, so you have to be very careful in picking someone to make sure they'll take you where you want to go.

I think Apple should look at buying Tesla. Most of what they sell uses batteries, so having your own battery manufacturing and design would be beneficial. They have car ambitions and hired a bunch of Tesla people to work on that. And they like to think of themselves as environmentalists and Tesla also sells solar panels. But Tim Cook would need to accept a demotion or leave, and making him leave would be a hard decision to make because Apple's real core strength isn't their past innovation but their supply chain management that Cook has built. He's a big part of the reason they make so much more money on phones than other manufacturers so you'd hate to lose him.
