I don't see how the NHL can cut down the playoffs when teams like Nashville make the finals, that's a big part of their appeal.

Like the NBA, the NHL season is just long. The NHL season started on October 12 and ended April 9th. The regular season is roughly 6 months and the playoffs is another 2 months. I still think that dropping to a 5 game series in the first round will not hurt the product. Using Nashville as the example, they swept Chicago in 4 games. They had a 6 day layoff before they played the Blues.

In New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago folks do enjoy both. It's unrealistic to expect the entire country to be into both the NHL and NBA playoffs. The NBA is more popular in the US by far and the NHL is more popular in Canada by far. That's neither right or wrong.

If anything the NHL needs to expand the playoffs. At one point they had 21 team in the league with 16 making the playoffs. They need to expand to 24 teams with the first round being a quick 3 game series using a 1-1-1 format over four days. It's possible and doable.
