re: Why can't folks just enjoy both the NHL and NBA playoffs?

To the OP: you found the type of person who can't just enjoy it. They try to read the tea leaves and look at every little tick as a sign for winds of change. I'm too drunk to fight with him.
Dude, more people watch NBA pre and post games shows than the fricking gazillion overtime game 7 with a pedigree team. GTFOH with that nonsense.
This was from last year. Stanley cup finals vs conf finals in a market with teams in both.
They're not even in the same galaxy. This is like looking through the Hubble telescope and thinking Jupiter isn't really that big but it's just because it's so far away.
Now let's stop arguing about this. I'd rather argue Lebron v Jordan.

May 31, 2016 12:05pm EDT Monday night was always going to be a trip to TV ratings sadness for the NHL; the league and NBC are relient on good showings from local markets. San Jose, already weak as far as those numbers are concerned, is also part of the San Francisco-Oakland market, and sports fans there had, uh, better things to do. Lo and behold, the numbers are in for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, and they are ... not great.

That's down from a 4.2 for last year,'s Game 1, which was fueled by the Chicago market, and the worst since the 2.4 Kings-Devils got in 2012. For context, CBS ran a rerun of something called "Scorpion," which your aunt probably watches, and it got a 2.6. "The Bachelorette" pulled in a 4.4. — On TNT, Golden State and Oklahoma City were pulling in an 11.2, the NBA's highest-ever cable overnight. — Most of all, in the Bay Area, Thunder-Warriors curbstomped Sharks-Penguins. None of that should matter to folks who watched the hockey game last night. Many, many more people care about the NBA than the NHL. Stephen Curry is more popular in the United States than any hockey player could dream to be. That's life, and it's OK. MORE: Nick Bonino is Game 1's hero Don't bother saying "it's a Game 7 vs. a Game 1," because it's just as easy to say "it's a conference final vs. an actual final." Don't be insecure. It isn't your problem. If Sharks-Penguins doesn't go six games or so, it'll be a problem for the league — but again, not you! Like what you like, and let other people like what they like. Unless they like trying to explain away their favorite sport's crappy TV ratings. Then, you are allowed to tell them that what they like is bad.

You're making statements and said NO competiton.
Go look at ratings in specific cities and there is competition. You're not smart enough to get my point so whatever.
