199 Democrats voted for the civil rights act compared to 163 Republicans. And of course it was signed into law by a Southern Democrat......Democrats passed the civil rights act.
More to the point progressives and moderates alike in both parties passed it....it was conservatives from the south who were against it...universally.....
false
Southern democrats. 11 yea. 92 nay
Here is politifact article that shows that the republican overwhelmingly supported the civil rights act

You are making my point for he my friend....there were 12 opportunities for Southern. Republicans to vote yes on the version signed into law...not a single one ever did........
On the other hand there were 103 chances for Southern. Democrats to vot yes on the Version that passed....11 of them did....while not great 10% of southern democrats voted yes while 0% of southern Republicans did....
There is also a significant difference between the % of Republipcans outside of the south who voted for the bill as passed, around 80%, compared to the % of Democrats outside the south who voted yes at almost 95%.
There wasn't much opposition to the bill but what opposition there was came from the south and even in the south some. Democrats supported the bill, including the president who signed it into law, while not a single Republican from the south did.
And even more telling is that the GOP nominee for president in 1964 did not support the civil rights act......
It took moderates and progressives from both parties to pass the civil rights act..a..had it been left up to our ancestors from the south it would have never passed although 10% of southern democrats supported the bill while 0% of southern republicans did
