SEC Network's Peter Burns calls out "The Internet" for Mid-Week Game Criticism

PM knows that the one knock on this team is the midweek game struggles. He says it in the clip. And anyone who knows how the committee works knows that unless you win your conference, the OOC games will matter because they get lumped in with your RPI/SOS which gets focused on the most during selection time. Are they more important than those conference wins? Of course not. No one has EVER made that claim. But it's the strawman people like Moscona built up just to make themselves right before anyone could know how this team would finish up in the SEC standings.

Yep...
Had we not won 11 of our last 12 SEC games, which the probability of that happening when we were 10-8 was low, those midweek losses would bite us in the arse. Hell, it's because of those midweek losses that we won't be the 3 or 4 national seed.

Meh....we would still be in consideration had we just won the West. Which would not have taken winning 11 out of 12. Clearly we wouldn't be nearly a lock, like we are pretty close to being now. But some work in the SEC tournament could have still put us in.

Only if we got to 20 wins, which would've required winning 10 of 12.

Saying midweek games don't matter at all is dumb.
But also having an absolute melt, like many have had, after a midweek loss is dumb as well.

Don't take those people seriously, they melt for any loss.

If they don't really matter, try to wrap your head around going 0-14 and with a 20-10 sec record. We don't win the SEC. Our RPI is in the 30s. Our overall record is 31-25. We win 1 game in the SECT finishing 32-27. Does that team even host a regional?

quote:You're talking about the people who bitch about anything and everything. Melting after one midweek loss (or any loss) is retarded in general. Looking back at the year and seeing 6 midweek losses, 4 of which are to two really bad teams and saying that's a concern shouldn't trigger Matt like it has.

quote:Of course it isn't. Because saying "they don't matter" isn't realistic.
That's just not realistic.

I understand what he's saying....he's just driving home the point too hard (well I'm assuming based off of what people say here). Midweeks can be treated like a try out, for new pitchers, position players you want to work in. If you do that you are bound to lose some, but you should also win some.
Assuming that happens...you take care of business in the SEC and you are sitting pretty at the end. You just leave yourself a smaller room for error in the conference.

I think Moscona has said all along that, if the team can get to 19 or 20 wins, then the midweek games won't matter. That has been his mantra pretty much from day one of the season.

Sure, but when you enter April and you've lost 4 midweek games to in-state opponents and have lost 2 of your first 3 SEC series, then there is cause for concern.

Absolutely....but the bigger cause for concern is the 2 of 3 series loses...not as much the 4 midweek games.

I honestly have no problem with how PM used midweek games. Some of them the players just sucked arse and it was certainly not on PM's shoulders.
quote:Of course. LSU did what it HAD to do in order to make them almost obsolete. But to say they don't matter after the Tulane game or even the USA game and get the message so wrong is asinine.

They aren't mutually exclusive... the losses in midweek are exacerbated due to the struggles on the weekend.
That's why midweek games matter, they can't really help your resume, but they can help sink it.

quote:Which would be wrong. If we were at 19 wins, we lost the west and would be squarely outside the seeding bubble looking in with our only real hop that Kentucky goes 0-2 and we win the SECT to even have a chance and that likely wouldn't be enough. However, if we got to 19 with 4 more midweek wins, our RPI would still be close enough to KUs where outplaying them by so much in Hoover may make a difference. It would also matter how we lost those 2 extra games. 2 to State or 1 to state and 1 to Auburn? Winning both serious would still look really good.
