The irony is not lost on me. But I agree with mrcartons overall principle- I simply don't think it's actionable.

The money has to come from somewhere. Pick your poison.

Ok that's fair. To clarify my point, insofar as we aren't realistically considering ending all federal student loans (which is the actual solution). The PSLF program actually provides an interesting way to compensate public employees in a way that may actually be cheaper for the taxpayer, so why remove this splinter when the log is still distorting the cost of tuition (therefore inflating the salary to hire these professionals)

Not to mention the un-documented benefit of giving these people more disposable income with which to push around money. No way someone with a 100k salary, 160k loans, and getting fricked in all holes by fed and state govs (especially for single folks) is buying a house anytime soon.

One of the better ideas I saw on this board was making student loan repayment be pre-tax. I could get on board with that and doing away with this program, or severely limiting it.

I don't agree. By virtue of the fact the program exists and how/why it came about dispels your point.

That's not a good point on your part. By that logic we can make all kinds of arguments that we both would disagree with.

The fact that I can't deduct my student loan interest on my taxes due to my income is bullshite.

Tax incentives for repaying your loans would be YUGE!

Another thing to note: if they're getting sticker shock over the PSLF forgiveness starting to come due, they're going to shite bricks in 15 more years when the IBR program is scheduled to forgive its first loans. You don't even need a qualifying job for that, just 25 years of token payments.

While true, pslf forgiveness is not taxed as income.

The ibr forgiveness program will count as income and be taxed. Lots of people about to get sticker shock when they get a 20k bill from the IRS.

It's a simple statement that people were not pining to work where they were needed. How do you want to change that? How do you want to satisfy the needs of an area or demographic?

I'll donate and volunteer to your campaign if you want to run on abolishing SS and income tax, and support private solutions. Let's get this shite done!

my opinion on this is 100% determined by whether they're pulling the rug out from people who have already taken loans.

Right, i don't support that. It would be devastating and stupid.

Trump is a fricking moron, and if I had to guess this is just ammo for future negotiations. he will drop this later and make it seem like a concession. It's too transparent though.

Try getting good ADAs, CPAs, doctors, etc nowadays without this. Of course you would support this.

This. It's how you get good Prosecutors in rural areas- getting them in New York or Chicago- that's not too hard, Harvard grads apply for that getting them in Eastern Oregon or Rural MS- yeah the PSL Forgiveness is a huge, huge part of the package- plus once those people live there for a decade a lot of them stay.

I know some shitty public attorneys who could never cut it at a private firm who will pissed at this. They make about 50k a year but don't have to pay their 200k student loans they owe.

So....basically your solution is- just leave those jobs vacant?

Are you asking me to describe how a market works? Cmon man. You already know what my answer is.

So you think the Government should dramatically increase the salaries of ADAs, Public Defenders and Doctors at the VA?

Given only two choices, yes. increasing salary is a much safer and predictable way of handling this intervention into the market.

frick ADAs but definitely on the other two. Complicated schemes to defer and disguise the cost of government by pretending we're doing something other than taking X amount of money from these people and giving Y amount to these people always end up causing more headaches than they solve.

I think of it the same way I think of "High-risk pools" in Health Care- a great solution that will truly help by harnessing market forces if, and only if, its sufficiently funded. I just have little to no faith that it will be sufficiently funded.
