I remember the Big Wheel commercial where the kid would pack a sandwich in the box behind the seat, cruise the neighborhood then eat the sandwich at a park or something relatively far from home.
That's not true. There was a fair amount of crime during the 70s and 80s.

When I was 8, it was ok for me to ride my bike miles away from the house, as long as I was with my brothers and the other neighborhood kids. Nobody was older then 12 or 13. We would be gone until after dark.
