I don't think we will ever truly find out what happened to those who departed. I don't think it would be a wise move for the writers/creators because it is going to piss off a bunch of people no matter what. So I think they should leave that a mystery and focus on the story of what becomes of Nora and Kevin and the rest of the world. That is what the show is about, after all, those who didn't depart - the leftovers.

The final shot will be Nora going into the machine and ending up in a hatch on the island from LOST and people collectively lose their fricking minds cursing damon lindelof and sending him death threats.
