When we bought our home it was hardwired for an alarm already. I decided against monitoring because I think it's a waste of money for my situation. I got a basic honeywell two keypad system. I think it was around $300.00. Then my tech hooked up a little chip in the box that allowed me to connect to it with my phone via connect2go app.

I get a text every time the alarm is armed/disarmed or if it goes off. I can also arm it and disarm it from my phone remotely.
