The deal is...people still thought of steroids as:

NFL players
Weight lifters
Body builders
Olympians in different sports

There was even this common refrain...a baseball player would never use PEDs because it would hurt his skill and restrict his swing.

PED was viewed as only for sports where you just need strength. Baseball was skill...you don't need muscle, a sense of feeling awesomely strong, young man testosterone or quick recovery.

Steroids doesn't make a skinny kid look like what McGuire turned into. He was always a fairly big muscular guy. Every nfl running back has tree trunk thighs. Doeant mean they are all juicing.
