Redshirt vs Non Redshirt player

Looking at the last couple of years I think the depth takes a hit when we burn a players freshman year when the player could and in some situations should Redshirt the first year. For example Rickey Jefferson, Duke Riley, Lewis Neal and Tashown Bower should all be coming back for their redshirt Senior seasons this year. Another example is Deion Jones whom should've been on this past years team as a Redshirt Sr.If a freshman is ready to play and make an impact play them but if they make a minimal impact their freshman year save that season for the back end of their collegiate carrer ie Ed Paris should be a red shirt JR this year.Nick Brossette should be a Redshirt sophomore as another example.

ok but not many players with talent are going to stay 5 years in college.

Do you honestly think Riley would have come back with the year he had last year? Or Debo the year before? I think we may could have redshirted a handful more, but we don't for 2 reasons: 1) recruiting and 2) you don't want to risk only getting 2 years out of guys like Brockers who peace out after their redshirt sophomore years.

Not a chance in Hell. Did you see Grant Delpit in the spring game? Between Delpit, Stevens, Lewis, Monroe, and Harris he won't stand a chance of playing next year.

If Fournette lite keeps on improving he may pass Brossette on the depth chart.

Thats would builds depth. Having good players behind starters.

You're right. It's a great thing LSU redshirted Michael Brockers a few years ago! You know with him leaving as a redshirt soph and all.
If a freshman is ready to play, you play them. Period. However, some players just don't get much better in their college careers. So they look great as a freshman, but never improve. Flip side is, some true sophomores improve a ton from their freshman year due to the limited, but sometimes very valuable PT they receive.
There's always exceptions, but you can't play the "what if" game when it comes to shirting players.

Your point is valid for some freshman who burn their redshirt on special teams or mop up duty. However, Debo would've never come back another year. Same most likely goes for duke Riley. Your point only applies for players who are not major NFL prospects.
