I remember when he transferred to Barca, most people did not see him fitting in with their style of play...

He was at his best as the destroyer in a double pivot, with Alonso as the DLP... He's never had that with Argentina, like you said... I've hated him playing as a CB so often for Barca, but when you have Busquets in front of him... it's hard to see the field in that role...

I'm actually impressed with Mascherano's passing for Barca. But I think Barca have had a coherence in positioning that national teams rarely can achieve. Mascherano isn't nearly as bad at passing as he was at Liverpool.

You could argue that the Messi-led Argentina succeeded despite massive mismanagement from the AFA.
