Yep-- said as much on the pod last night, but we all know this organization does everything backward In reality, they decided last Wednesday, but still the point remains As for the scenario where Gentry does bad and is fired 20 games in-- that to me is the worst case scenario. I'd rather fire him now. You'd just have an interim guy for the last 62 and that screams instability to Boogie Not a fan of that scenario
Yeah, the thought is supposedly they want stability for Cousins. However, what happens if next year is not good? It would have been better to dump Gentry/Demps now rather than next season when Cousins is up for a contract.

It is all about odds and options. If you retain Demps/Gentry, they will either do welll or bomb again. If they bomb, you can fire them and incorporate Cousins/his agent int he search for new GM/coach or make a push for Cal if you think he wants to walk.

On the other hand if you dump them now and you get the wrong coach/GM, there is a bigger risk. If the new coach/GM bombs, then can they fire them after 1 year? They would be putting all of their eggs in one basket. If Cousins doesn't like the new coach/GM and the team loses, then he walks and there isn't much the team can do.

This option is also cheaper.

Let's assume for the sake of argument that Cal is a trump card they feel they can play to keep AD/DC. If you play it now and it doesn't work you may lose both AD/DC. If you play it next year it's still a trump card that gets Cousins to resign and AD to agree to the new extension.

There just is no benefit to playing your trump card now unless you know it will work. I can't think of any HC/GM candidate that I would bet the future of the franchise on making this team way better in 2017-18 than Demps/Gentry would. There just aren't that many difference making coaches in the league. The time to play your trump card is if Demps/Gentry don't work out and you need to give AD/DC a reason to stay.

I like JVG a lot and wanted to hire him 2 years ago, but even if JVG was a name I think AD/DC would buy into, I'd still wait a year. This is the NBA where a key injury can crater just about any team's season even if you hire the perfect coach.

It should be a lot easier to sell AD/DC on a HC/GM that they both like and feel like they helped pick than on the 2nd guy to fail to reach the playoffs after this joke of an organization fired a coach that exceeded expectations and did reach the playoffs.
