It sounds like they are just removing the statues and not the bases as well. This is going to look terrible with just the bases sitting there with nothing on top.

I don't think so. IIRC, when I read the bid it laid out the construction of each statue and the bases. They required the bases be removed as well. Since the bases are anchored down into the earth it sure they can actually remove them without damaging them.

They'll inevitably be replaced with MLK statues. Maybe with luck we'll get a louis Armstrong one too.
