Musicians tend to be far more knowledgeable about music in that they tend to be exposed to more bands, particularly on the local scene. However, more exposure does not necessarily equal better taste. Taste is very subjective, especially when it comes to music. There are few things that all music fans would agree are of poor taste, because there is no music out there that appeals to no one. Every song has a fan base, large or small.

With that said, I think musicians certainly THINK they have better taste than non-musicians. Some of that smugness comes from knowledge of theory, composition, and just generally knowing what kind of work goes into making music. The rest of that smugness comes from typically having listened to more bands. "Oh, I've been listening to :insertunderground/localband: recently. They're not really 'mainstream', so I'm not suprised you never heard them before."
