My non troll list

1. Bob Knight
2. Coach K
3. Pete Carrill
4. Dean Smith
5. John Wooden

Most underrated: Stew Morrill. Always wanted to see how his system would do with more talent. Most fascinating college basketball system I have ever seen.

The top 4 to me are easy. I don't know who should fill the fifth spot. Adolph Rupp? Jim Calhoun? Jim Boeheim? Roy Williams?

If Roy Williams wins a title this year, does he have an argument for top 5?

Wooden
K
Knight
Rupp
Smith
Calhoun
Olsen
Izzo
Pitino

Not sure where I'd put him on a list with those guys.

Never understood the infatuation with Dean Smith.

I mean the guy was worshipped...and lauded like he was the GOAT when he retired.

36 years of coaching...2 Nattys.

21 years of coaching NC before his first title.

Yeah...he won a bunch of ACC Titles...but every famous coach dominates their conference...its what you do outside the conference that separates the wheat from the chaff.

Smith is basically who devised modern offense and substations. He is a rocket scientist of coaching

Wooden
Izzo
Coach K
Calhoun
Al Maguire

I really like Dean Smith and I think if they had a shot clock his whole career he would be in my 5 but I think that Four Corners cost him some hardware and that was his signature.

John Wooden said Smith "over-coached" and it's no surprise Smith won his first title after UCLA stopped being good (post 1980).

The old joke...the only person in basketball history that could stop Michael Jordan was Dean Smith.

Yes he overcoached early but his exchanging of wings and dives to basket to wing were revolutionary

In 1979 North Carolina played Duke.

Duke scored after gaining the tip, surging to a 2-0 lead. The Tar Heels held the ball for the next 11 minutes.

Smith wanted Duke to come out of its 2-3 zone. The Dukies finally deflected a pass but after inbounding the ball, North Carolina held it for two more minutes, before turning it over. Mike Gminski hit a free throw to make it 2-0 with 5:43 remaining.

The Blue Devils added a pair of field goals before the buzzer and went into halftime leading 7-0.

In the second half Carolina played a real game, but still lost, 47-40.

That about sums it up. Those 7 points of an entire first half of over-coaching and playing boring basketball was the difference in the game.

All good choices. Richardson was really good, but his bitterness eventually tainted his legacy and led to his downfall.

I'd put Gene Keady on that list. Never thought Lewis could coach a lick, but he managed to load up the talent, so credit to him for that...however he managed it.

I would rank Denny Crum not right at the top, but definitely top 10 IMO.

You're trying to belittle his accomplishments by comparing him to arguably the GOAT? Makes sense.

"I don't get the fascination with Hakeem Olajuwon. He didn't win a college title and his only titles came when Jordan was either out of the league or just came back."

That's how you sound.

Did you just say NIT national title.

I mean he did a lot for Tulsa...was a great coach, but you didn't make a great pitch with Juco and NIT. Nobody cares but at the highest levels...not winning consolation prizes.
