Planning a trip for others

Next year is my parents 40th wedding anniversary and my brother and I wanted to get them a trip.
Our heritage is mostly Scottish and my mom has wanted to go as long as I remember, so we are thinking of booking them a flight and room.
My question since tickets/hotel would be purchased using our credit card cards would it give them any real issue?
The other issue is getting their information while keeping this a secret. More than likely we will have to tell my dad to obtain this information.

First things first--do they have passports? No way to set all of this in motion on the sly if they don't already have passports.
How nice of you guys to do this for them! Edinburgh is on my short list of places to visit.

What information do you need to book the trip other than their DOB?
Passport numbers can be added later once you tell them. And I'm assuming you're telling them early enough to give your dad time to get his passport?
And did your mom fly or cruise to cancun? Make sure she's got a passport book. Not a passport card.

I've been to Scotland, there is nothing they really need except the passport and possibly passport numbers for transportation. But personally, I don't think it's a good idea to say "Hey, we got you a trip for next week." They need to be told months in advance, therefore there is really no issue with anything.

She flew to Cancun and would tell them at Christmas
