The hell we can't.

So you agree?? I'm confused.

A crime is a crime.

It sure it. And nobody is excusing crime. All crimes should be punished.

Having said that, there's no denying that some of those crimes are the indirect result of our forefathers sins. A trickle down effect, if you will.

I absolutely do not have to give any weight to what happened decades and hundreds of years ago when doing a cost-benefit analysis on DIVERSITY.

African Americans are part of our diverse society. How they got here and what role they've played in our nation's history is extremely important. Discounting it would be ludicrous when discussing diversity.
quote:

You want to be accepted, act like a civilized human being. Act like an animal and be treated like one.

You want to tell that to the thousands of African Americans who acted like civilized human beings and were still treated like animals in the 50s and 60s? Let's not act like all this is ancient history.
quote:

If your ancestral heritage prevents you from behaving in a civilized manner, that's fine, I don't blame you entirely, but don't ask me to put up with your behavior.

Well, it wasn't blacks who denied themselves of sitting in front of buses, drinking from separate water fountains, voting, going to world renowned universities, or the other basic opportunities? that we take for granted today.

No. I believe it was our other ancestors who did that.

Why didn't they lay a similar foundation in their own ancestral lands?

After we bought them, the French and English weren't done with them. Or are we going to casually dismiss colonialism??

You are correct. And you make some other good points.

However, if you ask an African America if they feel bad about the beating the old white guy took at the hands of the young black guys, they will say "No. They had nothing to do with it, and it was not their responsibility." Most would probably feel bad about what happen and even agree that the young thugs deserve to face time in jail.

That is how most white people feel about slavery. it was a horrific chapter in our history. Absolutely morally wrong. I think most, if not all white people (I give exception to the obvious racists) would say they are horrified by slavery and feel bad about it. However, we had nothing to do with it. Further, most did not have any ancestors that owned slaves.

Most on this board were not alive in the 1950's or 19060's, either. how far back are we going to go? Do we make Africans feel responsible for the raids along the Italian coast that their ancestors did while raping, pillaging and taking slaves? How about native Americans? Do they need to apologize and feel bad when they attacked other Native American villages taking slaves and wiping out entire villages?

At some point it has to be let go and considered to be in the past? Forget? No. But to hold an entire group of people responsible for acts created centuries before they were born is unheard of. If we don't let go and concentrate on how to make the present a better place we will always wallow in the past and play the blame game against those who have long been dead.
