George Carlin and Richard Pryor were the founding fathers of modern comedy.
Mitch Hedberg:
Was "the best" modern comedian in my book. Comedy preferences are from such a personal view thing it's impossible to say who is the Best-OAT. Hedberg is just another who sadly went way before his time.
So strange that suicide, self destruction, and drug OD's are a plague on those who make us laugh.

Partially in response to this thread - I watched Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979) - and that remains to this day one of the funniest things ever recorded.
He worked so hard on every element - like some of the things I said earlier - Richard worked the entire stage - put his entire body into it, although he was not particularly a "physical" comedian he could have done all of that, Chevy (or Jim Carrey for you youngsters) style - and his use of profanity for emphasis (despite a high quantity) - I feel that he influenced the way people made movies (particularly comedies) and not just stand up.
And the pain - MY GOD - he was able to use pain (apparently the soul of comedy) so well - it really is an art on the level of Rembrandt, Chopin, Kubrick, or whatever equivalent in other artistic endeavors.
