Good point, but it also leads into the OP's point.

In the south, it's baseball. In the midwest, it's wrestling. In the upper North or Northeast, it's hockey. In the mid-Atlantic, it's possibly lacrosse. Out west, olympic sports of all kinds are equally ignored (even though many championships are won).

But there is a valid case to be made that women's basketball is the third most popular sport in very few places.
