Announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles today, Hugo Ortega and Jianyun Ye have both been named finalists in the James Beard Awards’ Best Chef - Southwest category. This nod marks Ortega’s fifth consecutive year as a finalist, which perhaps means that this is finally his year.

Mala Sichuan's outpost on Westheimer made the Chron's health code shite list a few weeks back. Guess it adds to the authenticity.

It also made the Chrons top 100 restaurants in Houston and actually was somewhere in the top 15 I believe.

It's well deserved. I mean I don't know shite about Sichuan food but every meal I have had at mala had been awesome and It's been my post sharpston town golf course meal for three years.
Houston Chinatown is drastically underrated

vaught owns 3 very good restaurants ... backstreet cafe is a bit over-priced, but it's still very, very good food and a fabulous setting ...
