As someone who has actually done professional theater work, the NEA provides a smidgen of most theaters' funding. Most theaters get funding from donors, non-profits, and state-based orgs.
Furthermore, the artistic community has been producing work that makes fun of and insults conservatives for some time. They constantly complain about not having money and losing audiences, but then turn around and produce work that alienates a large portion of their possible donor base.
Furthermore, major theatrical companies and productions (Hamilton being one) openly campaigned and held fundraisers for Clinton. When artists cross that line, they are no longer artists; they have become propagandists. They have aligned themselves with a political party and, when that party is not in power, they're going to feel the sting of budget cuts.

They receive tax breaks...so in essence, the gov't is helping fund them by incentives to encourage donations/non profits.
