You sir have the history absolutely correct. One of the 5 best football teams LSU ever put on a field...IMO.
I especially cherished the Cotton Bowl 14-7 win over Arky. My dad obtained two tickets and we sat and watched Joe LaBruzo(?spelling) score two touchdowns as LSU shut down the vaunted Hoggie offense...although they did gain a ton of yardage as I recall.

The reason I remember that year so well is that it was my first year discovering football and LSU and I was a sponge :)
Just off top of my head, here from memory is the schedule that year:
35-6 A&M
42-0 Rice
63-8 Baylor
20-0 @Miami
37-10 Kentucky
21-20 Auburn (my 1st game EVER at DV)
23-26 @ Ole Miss
20-15 ala-shame-a
61-6 Miss.State
27-0 Tulane
