Late to the thread so probably answered for you already. The team voted not to play in a bowl as they were the first choice to play UT in the Cotton Bowl. But little Ara's boys decided they would get back to playing in bowl games for the first time in a million (if ever) years.
Real men in those days decided well the hell with you if you're too dammed chicken to play us, we'll just watch on TV rather than playing a lesser opponent. Noteworthy that the fear UT had of playing LSU was real.
It wouldn't work this way nowadays due to the money and snowflake mentality though...I don't think I left anything out.
