I got a travel trailer (5th wheel with slides) for Christmas and love it. It just made sense to me to get one and live in it while I find land on the water that I want to buy. Then I can live in it on-site while I build my new house. I also didn't want to deal with the hassle of packing and moving again,
My bf has a job where he often travels to job-sites for weeks at a time so it will be easy for us to take it rather than stay in a hotel. We also have many road-trips planned already. Plus we can take our dog with us without any issues.
With your situation with the wife and kids, I think it is a worthy investment. Just to be able to avoid the hassle of packing and dealing with hotel rooms is worth it. The kids will love it.
I am very happy with mine and have many happy childhood memories of going off on vacations in the one we had when I was a kid.

As opposed to the hassle of towing, burning more fuel, setting everything up, breaking it all back down, and having the clean the camper when you get home??
I'm not saying camping isn't more fun for a lot of people, but saying it's not a hassle is bullshite.
I just sold one after 2 years and it's just not feasible for short stays unless you are specifically targeting campgrounds, and then I would just get a cabin
