Traffic actually moves faster if you fully use the two lanes up to the merge point and then take turns.

YES.

I think every single driver should have to go to the DMV to renew their license and be taught the Zipper Merge and the left lane for passing only rule.

You teach just those two things to everyone and traffic will improve.

True but if everyone else is already in the other lane I don't feel comfortable being "that guy" and passing the whole pack. I don't think Bob did anything wrong until he got out of his vehicle though.
