We don't "have" to hold our tongue, but if we don't expect an adult to engage in immature insults with a child, is it that outrageous to hope that we can be the mature one as the leading nation of the world?

Sticks and stones and all that.

Besides they probably want a response, so the best way to combat unproductive attention-seeking behavior is to ignore that behavior.
