This is directly related to states rights, which California and New York destroyed by consistently voting liberal Democrat.

Things that are political in nature, such as abortion, have been foisted upon us by Democrats through incorporation of the Bill of Rights and the bludgeon of the equal protection clause and Commerce Clause (I'm looking at you, William O. Douglas).

Abortion was legal in New York before it was legal around the country. New York state also spawned no-fault divorce.
