I think it has more to do with the easy availability of money. There's no downside to raising tuition. It's not like the colleges care who pays it, and most often it's not the students money that is getting spent, so they don't care either.

That said, I think my solution would those who are already out of school to pay back some of their loans.

Actually it is 100% related to federally backed student loans and Pell grants.

I've posted links to the studies before but am drunk and too lazy to do it right now.

This is by memory but if I call correctly...
for every dollar of Pell Grant money Tuition rose 70 cents to eat up the benefit.

The other bad side affect of Federal Student loans is it gives colleges and Universities the opportunity to have more worthless programs of study...

Such as Native American Lesbian and Gender Dance Studies.
These worthless programs produce worthless graduates who can't get a job and be productive members of society and eventually all on the taxpayer dime.
