Maybe enough of the American public is brainwashed into 'buy American' that they don't have to be as reliable?
How else can you explain why someone would buy a Chevy Impala over a Honda Accord? Or a Dodge Dart over a Corolla or Civic? Or a Chevy Traverse over a Pilot? God damn, I could go on forever. The Big 3 make some truly awful vehicles.
My dad is like that, but he's 75 and "doesn't like what the Japanese did to our boys in WWII."

I don't either, but I still happily drive a Toyota.

EVERY auto company makes shite cars.
The difference is they don't import their shitboxes to the States.
Foreign companies tend to send their best stuff over here. For example, Mercedes and BMW only sell their luxury trims in the US while in Germany they are essentially Ford/Lincoln.
Same goes for the Japanese car makers. Honda and Nissan aren't going to bring their shittacular Kei cars to the US b/c they would hurt brand perception.
Also, a lot of those reliability stats are tough to take seriously b/c something like the stereo being a pain in the arse to pair with your bluetooth is considered a reliability issue.

To be fair, the Impala looks a lot better than the accord, IMHO. The new accord is about as lackluster as they come in the looks department.
