After three films, the DCEU has taken in around $2.3 billion worldwide.
BvS was supposed to make close to 1.5 billion dollars. It barely got past 900 million. It was a dud because word of mouth destroyed its chances at a billion.

The MCU made half that with their first three films.
Context is important. That was when the superhero genre of films was just getting started and people were starting to tune in.
MCU's last three films made 2.4 billion and two of them was with fricking Doctor Strange and Ant Man.

And that's with all three DCEU films being "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes and all three MCU films being "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes.
Word of mouth about how bad DCEU movies has been is damaging their earning potential and it will continue.
People want good superhero movies that honor the characters well, not the mindless bullshite that Snyder loves.

So a film that made $900 million worldwide is a dud now? It's incredible the expectations people put on these films in terms of making money. It surely disappointed in that it didn't make it to $1 billion, but to call it a dud is being a little overdramatic.

Not true at all. The superhero genre had been going strong at the box office since X-Men debuted in the summer of 2000. It was the draw of superhero films that made Marvel decide to take the plunge and develop an inter-connected universe. That never happens without the success of the X-Men and Spider-Man franchises.

Only if the movies continue critically disappoint. Hopefully Warner Bros. has learned their lesson and the next two films are better received.

WB owns DC comics, not just the movie rights. Unless they sell off DC as a whole (incredibly unlikely), they will continue to make the movies.
We can shite on the DCEU a ton, but WAG is absolutely knocking their stuff out of the park. Their TV shows are great. The actual comic books haven't had to be nearly as gimmicky as Marvel (minus the 2 recent reboots, but they get a pass because Flash Point and New 52 was amazing).
DC is not in a bad shape. They just need to make some better decisions. I don't think Mel is a good decision, but movie buffs really like him. At least he would make a serious movie for SS.
