All the complaining about the destruction was amusing to me. Is it really a stretch to assume that if some superpowers came here there wouldn't be any collateral damage? It's a ridiculous complaint.

Well, it's not the destruction itself that is the problem, it is how oblivious Snyder is to what is going on off screen. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I first saw it. If you can perceive that thousands perished due to Zod and Superman's duel, then it makes Zod's death entirely pointless and ridiculous.

I still don't believe that dozens of people went through that script and didn't see that incredible narrative flaw. And it's an easy fix: replace the nameless family of 4 with Lois. That's it. Snyder thought none of this through, and has Superman and Lois playing tongue tag at Ground Zero.

No doubt it's flawed, but the complaining was way over the top (and i'm not talking about you specifically). He's young and he doesn't have complete control of his powers yet. Zod, otoh, was an experienced general.

With that being said, I hated how he was used in BvS. There was no character development with Supes, and that's very disappointing.

It could have been made even more meaningful if Snyder and Goyer had simply saved the Superman/Lois love plot for a different movie.

All they had to do was replace her with Lana Lang and it would benefit the film greatly. They already had her in the bus being the one person who was nice to him. They should have used her as his main tether to humanity after Pa dies. It would have made way more sense for her to be the one that figured out Clark was going around the world saving people from disasters while he was in his lonely wanderer phase. Zod threatening to kill (and possibly even succeeding) Supes childhood sweetheart would have held far more impact than the recently met Lois who has the incredible power to ALWAYS be in the right place at the right time.
