Didn't Heath lose his glasses on the bridge? It's a very real possibility he stumbled upon this new group wandering aimlessly.

Re-watching now. Everything Gabriel did was at gunpoint. We just didn't see the gunman or gunmen until they drove away.
The Heath thing is an interesting idea. Hard to see how the new person or people got the drop on Gabriel without him sounding an alarm unless they had some leverage when they showed up. And Heath is the only unaccounted for member from Alexandria.
And...
If it stays true to the comics, the aliens should show up in the next few episodes.
