They've been hinting since the first episode that David's "dog" is important. I recall during the interrogation scene that The Eye put a dog figurine on the table.
Also caught a glimpse of the yellow eyed devil when Lenny/Denny got David riled up. It almost as if David merged with Lenny/Denny to become the devil.

Praying that the dog doesn't turn out to be a person that died and David is mentally substituting a dog in him memories. That's been done to death.
