re: LA sales tax is highest in the nation

I know what you're saying, but California is the world's 6th largest economy on its own. I think they'd be OK without anyone else. They essentially subsidize large sections of the US that aren't holding up their ends of the bargain. To your point, we're still all better off together than not.
