Th chili cook off is an awesome time and is the Friday/Saturday before the rodeo starts.
Action seats are the best (in my opinion) because you're on the actual floor of NRG stadium and they have a bar right there. shite is awesome.
The astro arena/Astro hall are chock-full of vendors selling everything under the sun from $5000 custom made boots to pickled rattlesnake meat.
Last, and certainly by no means least, The eye candy out there is astounding and if there is ever an event where it's possible to get tired of staring at camel toes in yoga pants, short shorts, or tight jeans that is the one

Only "big" rodeo I have been to was Frontierdays in Cheyenne, so I have no idea how Houston's set up is done since the venues are so completely different.
We sat right behind the bucking chutes in Cheyenne and it was the best seat I have ever had at a rodeo. Getting to watch the riders get on the horses/bulls and see the animals react in the chute was the coolest experience. Also, you were pretty close to the action when they opened the gate too.
