Also, if you're not going to have A/C then I would recommend September/early October. Will still be comfortable out and the leaves will be changing, which is beautiful up here.
As far as historical stuff, there's obviously a ton to see here. The Freedom Trail will be the best way to see most of the historical sites all in one afternoon. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes because it's a TON of walking.

Everywhere I've stayed in Boston has AC
