JMO, but if there is a bottleneck in traffic ahead of you, I don't think it really has much of an effect on where traffic merges. Early or late merging, the same amount of traffic still has to get through the same width of road at some point.

Zipper merging is a huge lie. The cars in the open lane must slow to allow merging at the pinch. This is what causes the biggest slowdown. Getting cars past this point smoothly is way more important than using both lanes.

Exactly. That "Unused Road" section in the graphic is pointless. Using that section isn't going to make the single land ahead move faster.
