BTW -- Bush beat Kerry in the popular vote by 3,012,166 votes
and Hillary beat trump in the popular vote by a similar amount...the popular vote doesn't decide the president
bush was an incumbent...advantage
during an armed conflict...advantage
facing the most boring and odd looking candidate who isn't relatable in any superficial way...advantage

And Kerry won Wisconsin by less than 1 pt. This game can go both ways
not really. shite, give bush Wisconsin and he still he's still behind trump's electoral haul. trump almost won Minnesota, new Hampshire and Virginia. bush didn't have the same heat on him from the press and opposition party and as an additional roadblock, trump had his own party sabotaging him at every turn.

I know that, and I wasn't implying that you didn't. Simply was pointing out that this talking point goes both ways, that if we are going to hang everything on the popular vote we should point out that GWB beat Kerry by more votes than Clinton's margin over Trump. So, despite Kerry's advantages in NY and California, Bush had 3mm+ more votes.

And, social media in 2004 wasn't on the same planet as what candidates deal with in 2016. It's not even close. And what's ironic is that in this age of over-informed people, "squeaky-clean" will become less trusted than those people with everyday, normal screwups.
