In a remarkable coincidence, the CNN => FNN (Fake News Network) transition occurred nearly simultaneous to Trump securing the nomination.
CNN developed a rabid bloodlust for everything Trump as soon as his opponent shifted from GOP brethren to Hillary. They ceased reporting on him fairly from that point. Trump responded.
What you see now is Trump counterpunching, and CNN getting tagged with every blow. Incredibly as a result, MSNBC finds itself set to put CNN in the rearview mirror for the foreseeable future.

I would argue the reporting bias was going on before Trump secured the nomination.
