Yes. Pro grade cameras can shoot at 8,10,12 and 14 bits. Most of that is data you don't see, but can see, if that information is analyzed and used. An example is HDR images. A lot of that is managing gamma curves in certain light spectrums. Canon has a 120 megapixel camera that is supposed to come to market later this year and a 250 megapixel sensor set to go into a commercial camera sometime in the near future. I can only imagine the amount of storage a 250 megapixel image needs.
