Alex Rodriguez left the Mariners in 2000. In 2001 the Mariners set the all-time wins record with 116 wins, then proceeded to choke in the playoffs.

93 bulls without MJ would have likely been favorites. They damn near won it all in 95 without MJ. The key is in 94 and 95 they were without MJ AND Horace
So 93 without MJ, but still having Horace, they are the favorites IMHO
ETA: looks like 94 did have Horace.

This is what I was thinking. The Mariners lost a hall of fame player in 1998, 1999, and 2000. After each departure they finished the following season better than the season before. 2001 was the only version that was best in the league though
