Peg winders make a lot of difference. I also used to use scissors or pliers to trim the string ends but I thanked myself for getting some proper wire cutters.
Also, I have always had trouble staying with the habit of washing my hands just before playing. That definitely helps prolong your string life.

don't want to start a new thread, so I'll ask here.
any advice on lower the strings on my stratocaster.
it's sky high compared to my Les Paul.
i've never done this myself and don't want to make things worse.
